~Style~
Hedonistically rich, perfumed, sweet and unctuous, but with a fresh, clean finish.
~Background~
Ripening late in the season at high sugar levels and with a heady dose of perfume, Viognier is ideally suited to the making of luscious dessert style wines and so was chosen for our first ever truly sweet wine. It is made from extremely ripe grapes, pressed directly to pre-loved French oak barrels. Fermentation was stopped when the sweetness and alcohol were in balance and the wine then matured for eight months on lees before bottling. The result is a rich and unctuous wine dominated by characters of fresh apricots, honey and toast, but citrus, florals and sweet spices are also evident. It should drink well to 2015 and perhaps beyond.
~Facts & Figures~
The season: Another excellent season.....A typically wet and windy winter and early spring came to a screeching halt as the vines started to hit their straps in October. The main growing season through to the end of April was consistently a degree or so warmer and 20% drier than the 30 year average, with less than 100mm of rain falling over those six months. A lack of significant extremes allowed us to avoid any vine-stress and harvest each variety in optimal condition.
Vineyards: This block of Viognier was planted in 1998 on classic free draining WA "Marri soil" (a deep layer of ironstone gravely loam over reddish friable clay) with a moderate southerly aspect. Vines are spur pruned and trained to a lazy vertical canopy.
~Tasting Notes~
Appearance: Yellow Gold. Nose: Primary aromas of fresh apricots, honey and toast, but citrus, florals and sweet spices are also evident. Palate: Thick and unctuous, with layers of soft, ripe, juicy stonefruit and a toasty finish with a fine, peach fuzz tannin balancing the sweetness on the finish. Cellaring: To 2015 and perhaps beyond? Food pairing: Perfect with stinky cheeses and/or someone you love.
