Vintage 2017 Report

The 2017 Season....

The 2017 season broke the mould a little, a vintage so different to all those of recent years. Spring 2016 was abundant with rain, and teamed with near perfect flowering conditions, the white varieties yielded higher than average crops in 2017. Unusually however, much cooler summer conditions meant the wines maintained a pure line of acidity, giving elegant white wine styles, and a much later start date to harvest.

The cooler conditions coupled with 100mm of rain in February and March caused much anxiety as to whether the red varieties would sufficiently ripen, however a long ”Indian summer” and only 3mm of rain since has given an exciting crop of reds…..intense, powerful and succulence are synonyms used with all red varieties from the vintage, and has the traits to be one of the best. But there were also lifts in exports to the US, including a 10 per cent increase in the average value of white wine and volumes being sent into the country.

Wines of WA chief executive Larry Jorgensen said that went against the status quo of the last five to 10 years.

"I guess people are finding we are back on the agenda in some of the countries where we traditionally had strong markets," he said.

Vintage 2017 Begins!

An extremely late start to vintage 2017, mostly due to cool temperatures and seasonal rain.

On a brighter note however, cooler vintages allow white fruit to retain wonderful delicacy, freshness and refined acidity. This has been seen in the Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc, both looking full of flavour, punchy and focussed as we move on to Semillon harvest.

Next week we will harvest Tempranillo for the rosè, and reds are about two weeks away. Winemakers are very excited!
