Made by Simon Burnell

The name Simon kept coming back to was ‘Laterite’. Simon had an almost obsessive knowledge of soil and he often said that it was the lateritic soils of the South West that helped make the region so good for growing wine grapes. The name also had the added benefit of alluding to his notoriously poor relationship with punctuality.

And of course he had the perfect name for this sangiovese: ‘Burnello’, a cheeky play on Brunello di Montalcino. The result is a balance between Simon’s deep intellect and his quirky sense of humour: Laterite Burnello.

What a surprise! Loved the berry flavours and so light and smooth. Plus I could taste a lot of TLC! My son who does not drink red even loved it. He is a horticulturist at Kings Park and tasted it only because it is his favourite soil. It was worth so much more than the 89 it received. I savor every sip and think how much Simon left behind-not just the wine but that family friends were able to come together and celebrate all that he achieved. Well done to you all.

This is a wonderful, easy drinking wine. We opened one and had it with a seafood paella. Perfect for this dish. I'm not a wine judge, but if I was, I would certainly score this above the 89 score it got. Feel very lucky to have been able to purchase this special release. Thank you Willow Bridge.
