The Black Dog is a classically styled Shiraz whose name hails from our second ever vintage in 2001 when cellarhands noted that the wine from our most spectacular hilltop block of estate shiraz was “as black as a dog's guts”. The nickname caught on amongst family and friends, so today, provided vintage conditions deliver us a shiraz of suitable depth and concentration to do the name justice, a new Black Dog is born.

Deep bouquet, dried plums, earthy beetroot and scented spice. Powerful and complex, black plum fruit intermingled with complex tertiary characters of dried nuts, spice and chocolate derived from ageing. Cellar for another 10+ years.

The winemaking is simple, meticulous selection in the vineyard, ridiculously low yeilds, ferment in small open-topped fermenters, hand plunge and press only when the tannins and fruit are in balance. Maturation is in French oak hogsheads for 18 months, around one third of which are new. It willl loyally reward time in the kennel for a decade or more.
