Bookends Fumé
2026 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon
Geographe, Western Australia
Citrus blossom, green apple, grapefruit and gentle spices.
Description
Bright colour, green hues. Citrus blossom, green apple, grapefruit and gentle spices. Palate has a supple texture, matched by key lime and flint, soft and fresh, with a long, delicate acidity.
Estate-grown vines planted in 1998 in the spectacular hillside vineyard of the Ferguson Valley in the Geographe wine region provide the fruit for the Bookends, so named as the Forest Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon blocks metaphorically stand at each end of the vineyard. Soil is typically a deep layer of ironstone, gravelly loam over red and yellow friable clay with slight westerly aspects at elevations of 220 to 250m above sea level.
Fermentation – Harvested cold, crushed and pressed, the juice is allowed to settle naturally before the onset of fermentation in barrels, 35% new French oak. The temperature in oak is allowed to peak at 22 degrees Celsius, and upon completion of fermentation, the resulting wine is matured in barrel for 2 months before early bottling.
Vintage – Above-average winter rainfalls provided strong subsoil moisture into the growing season and a later-than-normal budburst as a result. Mild Spring conditions led to near-perfect flowering, with even, healthy canopies. Summer remained dry throughout, stable and predictable, with typical cool nights in the Ferguson Valley. White varieties exhibited generous flavours at lower Baumes, whilst retaining a beautiful long line of ripe acidity, whilst reds have wonderful concentration, intensity and ripe tannin.
